Thomas Daykin is a police inspector in a quiet Dales town. One morning the body of the churchwarden in a local church is found, lying in the crucifix position with wounds to his hands, side and feet, in the aisle of the church - and when Daykin is almost sure that the murderer is the other churchwarden, he too is found dead in exactly the same circumstances.
