Most of the quotes contained in this book cannot be considered the best liberal quotes ever, I'm sure. And many of them weren't particularly liberal. The interesting thing is how often one quote would be contradicted by the next quote directly below, demonstrating just how incoherent liberal thought can be (and so can conservative thought; the reality is, there is no single coherent statement you can make on either side that all constituents will agree with). Some of the quotes appeared several times in different categories; this is a weakness with most quote books. For some reason, authors cannot bring themselves to put it in just once, and cross-referencing to other categories where it may belong. This one didn't even cross-reference where he put the quotes in other categories, and sometimes had the same quote twice in the same category, suggesting poor editing. A few gems in here, a few total clunkers. Most of them would not make my list of top 29,000 best quotes ever. ( )

Epigraph
Dedication
There quotations are for my son Matt, my daughter Casey, and my wife Mariann, who mean everything to me.

The book is also dedicated to memory of my parents William and Nancy Martin, who taught me the simple truth that politics should not be about protecting the interests of the rich and powerful, but about helping those who can't help themselves.
