Neste quarto volume dos Contos de Kolimá, Varlam Chalámov realiza um verdadeiro estudo sociológico sobre os criminosos comuns com quem conviveu nos terríveis campos de trabalhos forçados do regime stalinista. Em oito textos, o autor faz uma descrição perspicaz da cultura do mundo do crime, critica a romantização dos bandidos na literatura e mostra como o governo soviético muitas vezes se utilizou da "mão de obra" de delinquentes profissionais para reprimir e eliminar os prisioneiros políticos nos lagers russos. O volume inclui ainda um texto em que Chalámov lista as "lições" que aprendeu nos campos, além de uma carta a Soljenítsin em que delineia suas diferenças em relação ao autor de Arquipélago Gulag.
