The company was formed as Chapman & Miller in 1878 by the Newcastle sailing ship owners Ralph Chapman and Thomas Miller. In 1896 the partnership was dissolved and the company name was changed to R. Chapman & Son.

Chapman's built up a fleet of Tramp Steamers and by 1914 eight ships were owned. All their ships were taken up for war service operating as naval colliers and supply ships. Three ships were lost during the Great War but the fleet was rebuilt and by the outbreak of WWII the company owned 15 ships. Eleven ships were lost during the second war.
In 1951 the company was renamed as Chapman & Willan Ltd. The advent of bulk carriers and later, container ships spelled the end of tramp shipping and the old fleet was gradually disposed of. In 1974 the company was sold to Burnett Chapman Ship Management, Canada. ( )
