"This book records the details of over 4,800 recipients, who were awarded the Distinguished Service Order from 1923 (when the last major work on the Order was published) until 2008. Along with the details of their awards is other service and biographical onformation. Among those who received the Distinguished Service Order are the names of many famous soldiers, sailors and airmen, but so too are the names of a great number of other men who joined up, 'did their bit', and returned to civilian life. Many developed highly successful careers in other fields such as politics, diplomacy, academe, industry, and humanitarian causes. Some were colourful characters whilst most were relatively unknown to the wider world. All, however, inspired the men under their command and were true leaders. The majority of the awards of the Distinguished Service Order recorded in this volume were for the Second World War, but pre- and post war campaigns such as Waziristan, Palestine, Korea, Vietnam, the Falklands and the Gulf, are also included."--Back cover.… (more)
