We can do some things by ourselves, some things with help, and some things no one can do (put autumn leaves back on the trees). ( )

As the eponymous little bear prepares for his birthday with Mama and Papa Bear, he finds himself aided in a variety of tasks, from putting on his coat to picking apples. Heedless of the help he is receiving, he thinks he is capable of doing many things on his own. But when the leaves fall off of a tree during his birthday party, he discovers that there are some things that no bear can do, even with help...

American children's author Alyssa Satin Capucilli and British illustrator Lorna Hussey team up once again in this follow-up to Not This Bear, this time exploring their winsome little ursine hero's birthday experiences. Like its predecessor, This Bear's Birthday pairs an engaging story with cute, colorful artwork. Also like its predecessor, the narrative here has a repetitive structure, one which functions to highlight the central messages: everyone needs some help as they grow up, and some things aren't possible, no matter how old you are. What's important is how you respond to that reality. Recommended to anyone who has read and enjoyed the first This Bear book, and to anyone looking for children's stories about bears, birthdays, and working with what you have. ( )

Book description
It's Bear's birthday, and he's determined to prepare for his party all by himself. Who can get dressed, pick apples, and make peanut butter and honey sandwiches without (much) help from Mama and Papa? This bear can!

Then Bear finds out there are some things that can't be done. But with friends and family by his side, a bear can still save the day!
