Mary Slessor was a Scottish missionary to Nigeria. Her strong personality and determination helped her spread the Christian faith and promote women's rights. In 1876, she applied to the Foreign Mission Board of the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland. She had a small amount of training before being sent to Calabar. Mary unlike many of the missionaries lived with and like the locals. She learned their language and assimilated herself into their society. During her years in Nigeria she adopted many children.
