In this third book in the Writer's Retreat Mystery Series set on fictional Gull Island, a sports related death is explored when Trey Alderman, Gull Island s most important claim to sport fame, is murdered. Trey was the starting pitcher for the Gull Island Seagulls who went on to stand out nationally amongst college players while attending The University of South Carolina. It was assumed by most that he would be a top draft pick a year and a half ago and it seemed at the time that the sky was the limit in terms of his career. Trey came home for spring break during his senior year and while on the island he agreed to play in a charity event held in Charleston. The game, which featured other draft hopefuls, was a one run game. It was the bottom of the ninth, tying run on third, bases loaded, two outs, full count, and the tension was high. The pitch was thrown, everyone in the crowd held their breath. Trey lined up with the pitcher and swung the bat with all his might before falling to the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene. It was later determined that he died of a heart attack. He was twenty-two, healthy, and, as far as anyone knew, he had no preexisting heart condition. It was later determined that he had a drug mixture in his system that could lead to a heart attack when combined with extreme stress. The local investigator determined that he had most likely engaged in recreational drug use at the party he attended the previous evening.… (more)

Kathi Daley has a new hit series on her hands. The characters are well written and the detail of the environment is outstanding . I'd love to visit the resort.
This series is on Gull Island where Jill Hanford has moved to help her half brother after a stroke. Jack Jackson bought the local newspaper and is a famous author living out a dream. Guess what he writes??? Yep, mysteries! This brings Jill and Jack as well as other friends to form a group solving cold cases. Their newest cold case is the death of a famous movie stars sister in law, Georgia.
It was during a party and her date disappeared right after her murder and party. The estate where all of this occurred years ago has been sold and is due to be demolished. When they start digging the construction team ends up finding a body in a secret room! Now the group has not one but two murders to solve.
Great book that keeps you thinking and looking around every corner. Full of adventure and surprises. Looking forward to book three.
I recieved this book from the author for an honest review. ( )

The Mystery Mastermind group gathers again at Jillian Hanford's writers' retreat when a body is discovered in a house that is being demolished. Not only has the man been missing for several years, but he had been implicated in a murder at the same house five years prior. And if that is not interesting enough, wait until you hear all the connections this group of amateur sleuths digs up between the people present at the party the night of the first murder. Or was it the first murder?
As the gang gathers facts, they come across information that may lead them to investigate several more murders which may or may not be connected to the two they must focus on in the moment.
Toss in a few odd occurrences and red herrings for good measure and this is a whodunnit that will keep you scratching your head until all is revealed. Using your own whiteboard as you read may not be a bad idea.

Kathi Daley's strength is not only in writing a satisfying mystery that keeps the reader guessing but also in creating community amongst characters we come to care about. Jill took on the job of overseeing the renovations of her half-brother's resort, but didn't think she would feel at home there. In each book we see Jill becoming more attached to this island and the family she is creating there.

I can't wait to see what they investigate next. ( )
