After winning a national TV talent show and becoming a teen pop sensation, RyLee's fame and success was quickly followed by addiction, media scrutiny, and career suicide. Now, after a brief spell in rehab, 18-year-old Ryan has some rethinking to do. His stepdad--music promoter and self-appointed creator of "RyLee"--wants him at home under his thumb. But after a violent argument, Ryan decides to run away from his old life. When he meets guitar-player Toni, the opportunity to start afresh seems too good to pass up. Before long, he has arrived in a new city, joined Toni's amazingly talented band, and reinvented himself under the name Cal. For the first time in his life Ryan has friends, is playing the music he wants to play, and--despite living in a hostel and busking for his wages--he's finally happy. But just when Ryan feels like he has truly started over, his past catches up with him.… (more)

Gritty romance worth a read

Street song is well worth a read - I'd give it four and a half stars but Amazon doesn't do fractions. It's a story about a young man who has talent but lets himself be manipulated, who fails and falls. Ryan Lee Callaghan is RyLee, one time PopIdol; he lacks real confidence; his wild and sudden success undoes him & he takes to drugs... His meteoric career flashes out of existence. He feels he is nothing. After a final confrontation with his one time manager - & step father - he ends up in Belfast. While strumming a guitar and wondering what to do he meets Toni, a member of a two girl band called Polly Tree. Toni is a poor guitarist but a fine singer. Ryan, calling himself Cal for fear that his past will come back and bite him, ends up joining the band. The band clicks and things are looking up... Then the past and all the weak things that are RyLee come back to haunt his would be happy story... He becomes a song of the street, a dirge really. ( )
