Review of the World Publishing Company hardcover (1970)
After recently enjoying the graphic novel / jazz biography "Monk!: Thelonious, Pannonica, and the Friendship Behind a Musical Revolution" (2018) I started looking back at the various jazz books that I had saved on my shelves over the years. Several of the first ones were from the late 1960's/early 1970's when I had begun listening to various forms of progressive and/or fusion music alongside my earlier folk & rock albums. The 50-year span since the publishing of The Black Giants in 1970 was a tempting attraction to revisit the early years of avant-garde jazz. Although printed in 1970, the book actually collects articles from the 1960's of Jazz & Pop magazine which published from 1962 to 1971. ( )
