A follow up to the successful book of photography, In Our Own Image: The Art of Black Male Photography, Into the Light further celebrates the erotic, sensual and provocative nature of the black male through photography. It is the purpose of the photography to present positive images which will enhance our understanding of the black man by challenging our perceptions of him and to reveal the subtleties and complexities of his deeper self. While the twentieth century saw an emergence of several schools of photography, the black man, however was excluded as a serious subject of photography, except for daily images in newspapers whose images are largely confined to the black man as entertainer, athlete or criminal. The work here is thought provoking and borne out of a need for self-expression. The photographer strives to achieve self-empowerment by taking control of the portrayal of these images.
