What is the information highway? How will the new technology change our lives? Do I have to learn to use a computer? Will my job become obsolete? Welcome to The Road Ahead. We have all been bombarded by the seemingly endless hype about the information highway and the coming age of technology. Now, Bill Gates - who built Microsoft into one of the most successful companies in the world - gives us his vision of what the future holds for us. The Road Ahead is his bird's-eye view of the undiscovered territory on the information highway - an authoritative, thought-provoking, and very readable travel guide for the journey. In this optimistic and refreshingly realistic book, Gates looks ahead to show how the emerging technologies of the digital age will transform all our lives. As he says, we are on the brink of a new revolution, and crossing a technology threshold that will forever change the way we buy, work, learn, and communicate with each other.… (more)

It took me a while to get to this book...had it on my shelf for 15 years before the library was lost last year...but in this case, the lateness afforded a hindsight check on his predictions. Unlike Ray Kurzweil's wild imaginings, Gates was pretty spot on. He didn't anticipate the power of the smartphone, but he hinted at corollaries.

I've read three books by three of the big four (Jobs, Gates, Woz & Allen), and Isaacson's bio of Jobs, and Jobs was by far the least of them all - in intellect and ability, though Gates treated him with respect (even admiration!) throughout this book. Jobs was the least human as well. Anyway, this was well written and would have been a prophetic read when it came out, though the wait was worth it in confirming the prophesies. ( )

This book is about Bill Gates' life story and his thought for the future of computers.

I was very impressed. All fans of computer should read this book. ( )

The Road Ahead is a disappointment. The literal, logical software in Gates' head that made him such a computer genius does not translate into compelling storytelling—even with the help of two collaborators. His vision of the not-so-distant future, outlined in chapters with scary fifth-grade social studies titles like ''Lessons From the Computer Industry'' and ''Education: The Best Investment,'' is often too dry to draw you in. Even more mind numbing is Gates' penchant for explaining complicated things like encryption with equally arcane tutorials on factoring and prime numbers.
