While most of the world has drowned beneath the sudden rising waters of a climate apocalypse, Dinaetah (formerly the Navajo reservation) has been reborn. The gods and heroes of legend walk the land, but so do monsters. Maggie Hoskie is a Dinaetah monster hunter, a supernaturally gifted killer.

A fairly unique setting—dystopian Navajo lands isolated from a world almost totally destroyed by flooding. Some interesting characters—humans who manifest archetypal powers of their clans, immortals such as Coyote and Neizghání.

However, the plot was only so-so. It started quite well, but then devolved into an ending that was only half-explained and half-resolved. It felt like the author suddenly started rushing rather than continuing the nice pace of the first ninety percent of the story. Subsequent volumes may flesh it out, but it left this first in the series wanting. ( )

I enjoyed this one so much. Such excellent world building, reframing Navajo mythology in a contemporary form. Love how coyote is cast. Also a phenomenal audiobook. The voice actor did a amazing job. ( )

Suffice it to say that I did something I almost never do: finished one book in a series and then immediately bought and started the next one. ( )
