Biography & Autobiography. History. Sports & Recreations. Young Adult Nonfiction. HTML:In this captivating and lavishly illustrated young adult edition of her award-winning #1 New York Times bestseller, Laura Hillenbrand tells the story of a former Olympian's courage, cunning, and fortitude following his plane crash in enemy territory. This adaptation of Unbroken introduces a new generation to one of history's most thrilling survival epics.
On a May afternoon in 1943, an American military plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the planeâ??s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary sagas of the Second World War.

The lieutenantâ??s name was Louis Zamperini. As a boy, he had been a clever delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and stealing. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a supreme talent that carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when war came, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.

Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a sinking raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would respond to desperation with ingenuity, suffering with hope and humor, brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would hang on the fraying wire of his will.

Featuring more than one hundred photographs plus an exclusive interview with Zamperini, this breathtaking odysseyâ??also captured on film by director Angelina Jolieâ??is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the ability to endure against the unlikeliest of odds.

One of my favorites! It is based on a true story that everyone should know! It is a great story that students will enjoy reading."Unbroken: An Olympian's Journey from Airman to Castaway to Captive" by Laura Hillenbrand is a gripping true story of Louis Zamperini's resilience amidst World War II's chaos. Surviving a plane crash, weeks adrift at sea, and brutal captivity in Japanese prisoner-of-war camps, Zamperini's tale is both harrowing and inspiring. The young adult adaptation maintains the essence of Hillenbrand's original work, making it accessible for teens and a great choice for both classroom instruction and personal reading. ( )

FROM AMAZON: In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

Unbroken is an unforgettable testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.

I would absolutely recommend this novel to anyone who is fascinated with history and the lives that it impacted. I have read this novel with classes in the past and the students always enjoy the photographs from that time that are sprinkled throughout the book. This acts as an engaging tool that I use for discussion and stepping stones for adding in videos that tell more about aspects such as the B-29s and the Bombing of Pearl Harbor. ( )

Adapted for young adults from the best-selling biography, this is the survival odyssey of Louis Zamperini, Olympic runner, World War II airman, and POW. Included are over 100 photographs and an interview with Zamperini.

This book has such an amazing story while also incorporating many deep and meaningful elements. It follows Louis Zamperini throughout his life in journalistic fashion during WWII and has many great details that make it hard to put this book down. ( )
