Crabb's often criticized book came out in 1816 and despite criticisms several dozen editions were published before Roget's swept the field. For my purposes the print is entirely too small, but there might be a time when I would want to check it out.Clearly, as literacy advanced in the English speaking world this was a much needed book.
There is a good Atlantic article on Roget that gives an insight into Crabb's role.
