Nel 1789, alla vigilia della rivoluzione, per vendicare la morte di un amico repubblicano ucciso in duello dal marchese De Maynes, il cinico e galante André Moreau si unisce a una compagnia di attori girovaghi dove lavora la sua fidanzata, prende lezioni di scherma, s'innamora di una contessina e sfida De Maynes. È uno dei più saettanti e spassosi film di cappa e spada nella storia di Hollywood e offre, tra l'altro, uno dei più lunghi, inventivi e dinamici duelli mai visti sullo schermo, quello tra S. Granger e M. Ferrer ("doppiato" da una controfigura) che dura quasi 7 minuti, trasformandosi in uno straordinario balletto.
