Well, I finished my first manga. I never would've picked it up if someone hadn't of recommended it to me. Not the best graphic novel I've read, but the cliff hanger ending did convince me to read the next book. And I enjoyed all the world building and (I assume?) Folklore inspired characters. ( )

An innocent boy becomes hardened as a demon slayer. I assumes it's either for revenge of the death of his family or to reach the Oni lords to find a cure for his sister; his motivation is unclear.

The art style carries the manga, but there are other feudal Japan series that I'd rather be reading. ( )

The experience was... okay? There was nothing spectacular or particularly horrible about it. It was a surprising moment or two, but that was pretty much it.

After his family is murdered, the main character becomes a demon slayer and caretaker of his demon sister.

Despite the odd writing style, I appreciated it being a translation. In two chapters, diary-style writing almost ruined the vibes and seemed amateurish. There were also a few spelling errors; Tanjiro’s name was consistently spelled as Tanjirou in the last few chapters, but I put it down to translation issues.

It all moves at a reasonable pace, and the fights and such are brutal enough but also pretty flashy. Characters were also enjoyable, especially the dynamic between siblings. The art is well-done, and I'm curious to see how it will turn out. Despite not being entirely new and not blowing you away, it is a solid experience. An overall rating of 3.5. Looking forward to the next one. ( )

The fourth star is purely for long-haired Tanjiro. He should have kept it long. Overall, the art for this is nice (though not really my thing), and the story is a solid shounen beginning. The cast of characters is interesting, too, and I still appreciate how supportive the community is to Tanjiro. I started with the anime, which helps, because I prefer the anime character models more, and I find it easier to understand what's going on in the show.

If you like the manga, I highly recommend watching the anime. ( )
