The title story in this collection, "The Bedquilt," is probably the most accessible to readers, being about artistic creation, color, textiles, perseverance, and how social relationships change when a formerly self-effacing person not only takes on a major textile project, but is then recognized for it.
I found, however, that the other stories in this collection were even more original in concept and , indeed, life-enhancing for me. A wide range of people and topics were addressed, including inter-cultural and inter-racial stories. Dorothy Canfield Fisher provides insight into "incomprehensible" expectations that separate American blacks and whites or separate Americans from other countries' peoples. The prose is beautiful. ( )
