I liked the Victorian style in the illustrations. ( )

Summery: This is a different version of the tale of Little Red Riding Hood. This Little Red, a boy named Thomas, lives at an inn that his parents run. They are known for their tasty ginger ale. Every week Thomas delivers a keg of ale to his grandmother, and while on his way he stops, takes off his cloak, and picks some apples in the forest. A wolf steals his cloak and races to his grandmother's house. He eats her, dresses in her clothes, and waits for Little Red. The boy finds his "grandmother" looking very different from the last time he'd seen her, and asks several questions regarding her appearance. The wolf finally has enough, and tells Little Red that he has eaten the boy's grandmother and that Little Red is his dessert. Little Red suggests that instead of eating him, the wolf can drink the ginger ale. The wolf drinks it down in one gulp, and releases a big belch that releases the grandmother. Little Red takes the keg, thumps the wolf over the head, and ties him up. When the wolf awakens, they agree that Little Red will provide the ale for the wolf every week if they wolf will stop eating people.

Reflection: What a funny spin-off of an old favorite! I've always loved the tale of Little Red Riding Hood, but found this version to be just as entertaining. I didn't really like the pictures, though. I found grandmother to appear more scary than the wolf...

I like the fact that this version had a little boy instead of a little girl.

Extensions: I'd totally have the kids drink ginger ale with their snack for the day. Another idea might be to explain why we burp. (Okay, it's a little gross, but have't you ever wondered why we do it?).

This is a different version of the classic Little Red Riding Hood. In this version Little Red ends up making a deal with the wolf for safe passage through the forest. The story teaches compromise as a way of conflict resolution.

Very fun rewrite. I don't know whether to shake my head in disgust or laugh out loud at grandma's rescue. ( )
