Very different to the 'Lonely Planet' guides. Although this features a brief section on hotels at the back, and some broad tips on travelling in Europe, the main thrust of the guide is on the traditional sights. Lots of churches and cathedrals, vineyards and concert halls. Like a tour guide, the book takes the time to describe tourist attractions in some detail, with lots of photos and text boxes of historical figures and such. In this sense, even though one has presumably bought this book to visit the country, it serves as an attractive reading volume also. There is a potted history of Germany and other such items that make this more useful for the sightseeing tourist, i.e. someone who wants to read a 2-page spread about a monastery in Maulbroon - complete with animated diagram of the building! - and less targeted at the casual observer, say, someone visiting for a nightclubs-and-beer backpacking tour.

As it goes through all the main areas of Germany, this volume (in a relatively new edition) still has a lot of merit even in the age of the internet. You'll also want to use Lonely Planet or some kind of app, but it's pretty great. ( )
