Era in vacanza nella tenuta di San Rossore il capo dello Stato (era un re, Vittorio Emanuele III) quando gli portarono da firmare le fascistissime leggi razziste (approvate da tutti, Gran Consiglio, deputati e larga maggioranza degli italiani, inutile girarci attorno). Il re firmò e fu subito razzismo di stato. I magistrati corsero per i posti nei nuovi tribunali della razza (carriera garantita). I professori corsero per accaparrarsi le cattedre rimaste vuote. Einstein si dimise dall’Accademia dei Lincei. Fermi, Segre, Modigliani fuggirono all’estero. Rita Levi Montalcini si rinchiuse in una cucina (quando uno vuol studiare non lo fermi facilmente, lei utilizzò uova in un laboratorio improvvisato). Ad altri scienziati e ricercatori andò molto peggio: finirono nelle camere a gas. Dopo 80 anni i rettori delle università italiane hanno deciso di chiedere pubblicamente scusa.
