The #1New York Times bestselling author ofYear One andOf Blood and Bone concludes her stunning new trilogy praised as "A match for end-of-the-world classics like Stephen King'sThe Stand." After the sickness known as the Doom destroyed civilization, magick has become commonplace, and Fallon Swift has spent her young years learning its ways. Fallon cannot live in peace until she frees those who have been preyed upon by the government or the fanatical Purity Warriors, endlessly hunted or locked up in laboratories, brutalized for years on end. She is determined to save even those who have been complicit with this evil out of fear or weakness--if, indeed, they can be saved. Strengthened by the bond she shares with her fellow warrior, Duncan, Fallon has already succeeded in rescuing countless shifters and elves and ordinary humans. Now she must help them heal--and rediscover the light and faith within themselves. For although from the time of her birth, she has been The One, she is still only one. And as she faces down an old nemesis, sets her sights on the enemy's stronghold, and pursues her destiny--to finally restore the mystical shield that once protectedthem all--she will need an army behind her...… (more)

Great end to the trilogy ( )

I waited and waited for this to become available on audiobook, and it never did, so I eventually checked out a hardcover from the library and read it the old-fashioned way. It was a good conclusion to the trilogy, not quite up to the level of the first two books, for me, but satisfying. This one felt both action-packed and kind of draggy, spending a lot of time on random tiny battles that never added up to much. Still, it was great to spend time with these characters and their world. Fun! ( )

It’s been twenty years since the Doom, a virus unleashed on mankind by the breaking of a magical shield. The survivors look to The One to return light to the world.

Fallon Swift, now nineteen, raises an army of both magickal and nonmagickal to bring down the corrupt and to fight the dark. Can she lead them to victory, vanquish the dark, and give the people Light for Life?

The trilogy began in “Year One” with the harrowing apocalyptic illness that changed the world forever and continued in “Of Blood and Bone” with the rise of The One. Now it concludes with an epic battle between the dark and the light. Anchored by the strong world-building throughout the trilogy, the unfolding narrative offers hope in the face of darkness as it speaks to the power of love and family. Filled with well-developed characters, the conclusion of the trilogy places a strong focus on Fallon who, as The One, is the ultimate hope for humanity’s continued existence.

In a world where acceptance of others, kindness, and love are often in short supply, readers will appreciate seeing triumph here as the folks of New Hope all play a part in bringing about the return of the light as they abandon chaos and despair in favor of progress and hope.

Highly recommended. ( )
