Again with a 5 star rating. All these books in this series deserve a 5 star rating. I felt different though when I finished this one. It seemed like an ending. James returns home from the war, and he's coming home to his wife and son James. His family isn't at Skeldale House since he left for the war. Helen has moved back to her family home, a little bit out of the town of Darrowby. Yes, I was sad. But then I realized that I siill have 2 more books left in this wonderful series, so I took comfort from that. I can't recommend these books enough. They are wonderful--each and every one of them, and each and every one of the stories. These books, more than any I have read, portray the passsge of time for it really is. Each of our lives is just a whisper in the big picture, but each whisper brings another set of perspectives, another story, another friendship, and most of all, another animal friend. For those who love animals these books are a must read. You will not regret the time spent. Not for a moment. ( )

Title: Vet in a Spin
Series: All Creatures Great and Small #6
Author: James Herriot
Rating: 3 of 5 Stars
Genre: Non-Fiction
Pages: 224
Format: Kindle digital scan

Synopsis:

James completes his pilot training and is all set to do his part in the RAF when a minor bit of surgery removes his A+ health rating and he loses his rating to fly. After kicking about, the RAF sends him back home to be a vet again.

Stories from his vet days are once again interspersed and make up the bulk of the book.

My Thoughts:

Another good edition of the Vet series. I really wish he'd done more about his actual time in the RAF though, as the little tidbits he doles out shows that he can tell much more than just animal stories.

The ending with him entering Darrowby, for the first time again, to start over and wondering if his vet skill have atrophied in the time he spent in RAF training is a good look at a young man who has done a lot but just isn't sure.

The stories seemed to jump about a bit - mostly starting in the R.A.F. then switching to the past.

Would have liked to hear a bit more about life in the R.A.F. :-)

There were some sadder and more serious stories in this one as well as some which I have seen in the TV series. Really enjoyed those familiar ones.

Liked Ned and Elsie's story and Mr. Potts and Nip's, they made me smile. :-) ( )

James Herriot talks about his training as a RAF pilot in World War II and also is reminded of life as a vet before the War. This man writes like my father tells stories and is both amusing and touching. Damn him anyway for keeping me from getting to sleep until I read just another page to the end. ( )
