I think many readers might begin reading Story of my Life by Jay McInerney and start discounting it as just a rich people sex and drugs novel. I almost did at first. But, as I continued reading Alison Poole's story about her escapades and friends who betray her, along with her mentions of her messed-up parents, I found her more of a sympathetic character. Set and written in the 1980s, a time I am all too familiar with -- was the about same age as Alison Poole during that time era. ( ) This was lent to me by a friend, who prefaced this as "a dumpster fire" of a book. There is no lie in that statement. The characters were a hot mess, the plot was a hot mess, the writing was a hot mess. I think I got second hand high reading about all the drugs they snorted up their noses. I'm honestly amazed I finished it. Another fascinating novel from the author of Bright Lights, Big City. McInerney is clearly a master of experimenting with narrative voices and structures. I look forward to reading this one again. Alison Poole reminds me a little of a female Clay (Less Than Zero). Not surprising at all since both authors were part of the literary brat pack of the eighties and anyone can see the similarities in their work. This is [a:Jay McInerney|14079|Jay McInerney|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1178138066p2/14079.jpg]'s third novel I've read. The first one was his first novel, [b:Bright Lights, Big City|86147|Bright Lights, Big City|Jay McInerney|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1399647015s/86147.jpg|144128] and the only thing I didn't like about it was it was written in second person narrator, which can be distracting. The next novel I read by him was [b:The Last Of The Savages|306033|The Last Of The Savages|Jay McInerney|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1173580861s/306033.jpg|1836642]. I enjoyed that one and need to get a copy of it. This is his second novel. I enjoyed it and was happy that it wasn't told by second person narrator, like his first one was. It is about Allison Poole and is told by her, in first person. It feels like you, the reader, are sitting with Allison and she's telling you her story. There is an informal structure to it that feels natural and not forced. no reviews | add a review
