"A fresh angle on apocalyptic fiction. Skye is a fascinating and complex character, and in this premise of a rapidly emptying world, it is essential to have a unique protagonist at the center driving the story forward. Mikeworth’s insight into human nature is visceral, particularly for readers who have struggled with solitude, trauma and loss. Strange Days works to remind readers of their humanity, and humility, and perhaps spark greater appreciation for all that they already have, and all that they take for granted." —SPR
The start of Skye Cassidy's adult life is also the beginning of the world ending as she knows it. At her twenty-first birthday celebration, she hears for the first time about a deadly flu-like illness sweeping the country. Before long the hospitals are being overwhelmed and entire areas have been quarantined. As more and more seats around her in class or at the café where she works become empty, Skye realizes the sickness has made its way to them. Abruptly all the schools close their doors, and many jobs shut down as well, including Skye's. Not long after, the utilities fail and gas and food become scarce as the sickness reaches epidemic proportions, causing critical infrastructures to collapse and transportation to grind to a halt. While nearly everyone around Skye dies, she continues to live and has to fight to survive in a strange and sometimes hostile environment. Struggling to adapt to her increasingly solitary existence, she must navigate a series of encounters and pitfalls along the way on a grim and desolate journey to find someone like her to alleviate her all-encompassing loneliness and give her a reason to go on. Strange Days is a gritty, compelling tale of courage and strength in the face of unfathomable loss and the hope for a salvation that seems out of reach. No library descriptions found.
