(more)

DNF. I was not fond of this book and quit after 100 pages. However, my reaction is a function of my preferences in storytelling. The story is a literary exploration of the many variations that anxiety and melancholy can assume. Other readers may enjoy this theme.

Backman focuses on character development, using a non-linear storytelling approach with frequent flashbacks to tell characters backstories. Unexpected veers and turns occur that require readers to assume they will understand at some later point. Plot development proceeds at a sluggish pace, and nothing much happens in many of the scenes. Most of the characters are unlikeable. They lack an aptitude for their position and appear to be incompetent and cognitively challenged. Life is not working out for them.

However, the author’s use of similes and metaphors is cleverly inventive. I imagine readers who do not give up on the book will find that everything work out in the end.

Although Backman is inventive, I could read only short sections at a time before I got bored with his cuteness. A little cuteness is welcome, but Backman seems like the compulsive talker who regards “hello” as an invitation to talk non-stop for half an hour. Storytelling is a collaborative effort. The writer writes, and the reader reads. Trouble occurs, as in this instance, when the reader is through reading before the storyteller has finished the story. ( )

This was a solid book and a quick read. The bank robbery/hostage story was funny. Enjoy the author's writing style. Overall the plot wasn't my favorite. I guess I just wanted more gravity/weight to the story or importance of the book (especially right after reading Bob Iger's book). ( )

Anxious People is a story about a bridge. And a bank robbery. And a hostage situation. And an apartment. Really, though, it’s a story about a bunch of idiots just like all of us. In the end, it’s a delightful read that’s full of humanity, poignant observations about life and relationships, mixed in with a few fun plot twists.

Backman’s writing is whimsical and, at times, lyrical. And the format alternates between perspectives, all of which takes a little while to get used to—especially since there’s a mystery to be solved. Once the story gets going, though, it makes for a fun and delightful read. 4.5/5 stars. ( )

A very clever author, Backman provides an entertaining story that includes a great deal of pathos and anxiety for its characters but not without a great deal of charming dialogue for the reader. I enjoyed this book and loved the interspersing of the author's philosophy on life and its troubles and challenges pointed out throughout the plot.

Now and again the author provides a chuckle or laugh out loud moment for his readers. It takes real talent to tell a story about hostages and suicide and hold a reader's attention. Backman succeeded in holding my attention from start to finish. I encourage readers to pick up this book and engage with a group of characters who are held captive by a supposed bank robber and whose experience the night before New Years in a small town in Sweden will keep you looking for explanations on the whys and wherefores as you turn the pages. Enjoy Backman's brilliance. ( )

One of the funniest books I have read this. This book deals with some very serious topics but it is such a beautifully feel good book. It warmed my heart just reading it. I recommend it to everyone ( )

Book description
Viewing an apartment normally doesn't turn into a life-or-death situation, but this particular open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes everyone in the apartment hostage. As the pressure mounts, the eight strangers begin slowly opening up to one another and reveal long-hidden truths.

First is Zara, a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else until tragedy changed her life. Now, she's obsessed with visiting open houses to see how ordinary people live—and, perhaps, to send an old wrong to right. Then there's Roger and Anna-Lena, an Ikea-addicted retired couple who are on a never-ending hunt for fixer-uppers to hide the fact that they don't know how to fix their own failing marriage. Julia and Ro are a young lesbian couple and soon-to-be parents who are nervous about their chances for a successful life together since they can't agree on anything. And there's Estelle, an eighty year-old woman who has lived long enough to be unimpressed by a masked bank robber waving a gun in her face. And despite the story she tells them all, Estelle hasn't really come to the apartment to view it for her daughter, and her husband really isn't outside parking the car.

As police surround the premises and television channels broadcast the hostage situation live, the tension mounts and even deeper secrets are slowly revealed. Before long, the robber must decide which is the more terrifying prospect: going out to face the police, or staying in the apartment with this group of impossible people.

Rich with Fredrik Backman's "pitch-perfect dialogue and an unparalleled understanding of human nature" (Shelf Awareness), Anxious People's whimsical plot serves up unforgettable insights into the human condition and a gentle reminder to be compassionate to all the anxious people we encounter every day.
