Sunny has issues common to many seventh graders - best friends growing apart, being uncool, getting into Dungeons and Dragons (but is THAT uncool?), and getting comfortable with herself. The illustrations greatly enhance the narrative. A fast yet thoughtful read, with nostalgic value for those growing up in the 1970s. ( ) Maybe I'm being too harsh, but this graphic novel is very basic. Sunny find that she enjoys playing Dungeons and Dragons. It's 1978 and she reads an article about being groovy, so everything she does registers on the "groovy" meter. She finds that she often falls short. She also discovers that she needs to find what she enjoys instead of following others. That's about it. It seemed choppy to me; all that held it together was the groovy meter. I have nothing against entertainment reading, but there's no room for learning about character development or critical thinking. no reviews | add a review

"Sunny's just made it to middle school . . . and it's making her life very confusing. All her best friend Deb wants to talk about is fashion, boys, makeup, boys, and being cool. Sunny's not against any of these things, but she also doesn't understand why suddenly everything revolves around them. She's much more comfortable when she's in her basement, playing Dungeons & Dragons with a bunch of new friends. Because when you're swordfighting and spider-slaying, it's hard to worry about whether you look cool or not. Especially when it's your turn to roll the 20-sided die." -- Provided by publisher.
