Artemisia Gentileschi é talvez tão conhecida por ser uma excelente pintora como pela sua vida trágica. Ela foi estuprada por um amigo de seu pai, passou por um traumático julgamento após prestar queixas, tendo sido examinada e aceitado testemunhar sob tortura como forma de evidência [sic]. O culpado, mesmo tendo confessado o estupro e, mais importante na época, que ela era virgem, nunca pagou pelo crime.
Dizem que foi esse trauma que a fez se focar na figura de Judith, que virou uma especialidade. Mesmo com tudo isso ela foi capaz de ser tornar uma pintora reconhecida (depois de ter recuperado a respeitabilidade [sic] com um casamento arranjado), e espalhou a influência do Caravaggismo até Napoles. Depois de conhecer sua história, tive que comprar o livro para conhecer melhor sua obra. ( )
