Il diario di Ulrich von Hassell costituisce una delle rare testimonianze autentiche della resistenza contro Hitler e il regime nazionalsocialista. L'autore, ambasciatore tedesco a Roma dal 1932 al 1938, fu sollevato dalle sue funzioni per aver criticato la politica estera di Ribbentrop e Hitler. Arrestato dalla Gestapo il 28 luglio del 1944, fu condannato a morte 1'8 settembre. La sentenza fu eseguita due ore dopo essere stata pronunciata. Il suo diario lo accompagnò sempre, rappresentando per lui un vero pericolo, fino alla cattura: si tratta di appunti, spesso scritti in gran fretta, che proprio per il loro carattere immediato rappresentano un documento politico e umano di prim'ordine.
