It was probably 15 years ago when I read Blindsighted, the first book in Karin's Grant County series. The book was centered on a horrific rape scene. Fast forward to this one, which is #10 in the Will Trent series, with Dr. Sara Linton tying the two series together. This book starts with a prison riot, whereby a prisoner offers to trade testimony for a transfer to a lower security prison. He was thought to be the perpetrator of a series of blitz attack rapes, but had always claimed innocence. "Cons always con" is a theme. We move back and forth in time between Jeffrey Tolliver's weak and somewhat manufactured case against the prisoner, who seemed to be the bad guy, and the discovery of a series of continuing blitz attack rapes, often murders, which are being investigated by Amanda, Will, Faith in the present. The M.O. evolves slightly but most of the horrifying details are the same. Knocked unconscious, drugged, paralyzed, raped, and left for dead in a wooded area, with no DNA occurring in March and October. A few victims survived with a memory of being stalked, and a missing hair tie or comb. While I am impressed with her writing, I found the vicious attacks against women truly abhorrent (reducing my rating.) Sara Linton's discordant love life with Tolliver in the past and with Will in the present interweave the past and present investigations. ( )

Karin is back to writing a good story after the last book was a dud. ( )

Thank you HarperCollins for my copy of this enjoyable read! I didn't realize this was #10 in the Will Trent series. Do need to read all the previous ones before this - maybe. Would you get more out of the characters' background if you did - Absolutely! But not necessarily as this story can stand on it's own as the author does a nice job of filling the reader in. It is about a rapist and murderer (warning: it gets pretty graphic at times so not for the faint of heart) and had some impressive twists that had me guessing (and on the edge of my seat).
So close to 4 stars! ( )
