Joe Dalton har endelig affundet sig med fængslet og får sine brødre William, Jack og Averell til at indrette cellen hyggeligt. Netop da får de besked om at de skal flyttes til et andet fængsel tæt på grænsen til Mexico. Under transporten bliver fangevognen kidnappet af mexicanske banditter under ledelse af Emilio Espuelas, fordi disse tror at indholdet af vognen må være en kostbar skat pgra den bevæbnede eskorte. Emilio er mest stemt for at skaffe sig af med konkurrenter med det samme, men lader sig overtale til at lade dem leve, for forretningen går lidt sløjt og måske har Daltons friske ideer.
Averell spiser dem selvfølgelig ud af huset og kort efter dukker Lucky Luke og Jolly Jumper op i følge med Ratata for at hente Daltons tilbage til USA. Mexico har nemlig truet med krig, hvis amerikanerne ikke fjerner Daltons.
Joe får raserianfald, når bare Lucky Luke omtales, men han er nødt til at skjule det, for Emilio ville uden tøven udlevere Daltons, hvis han vidste at der var en dusør på deres hoved. Et par fortalelser, som Joe er nødt til at dække over, betyder at Emilio tror at Lukyluk betyder Caramba og Ratata betyder hund.
Joes ide om at lave bankrøverier i en lille søvnig mexicansk by er ikke nogen succes, så i stedet prøver de at kidnappe den lokale godsejer. Det er imidlertid en fælde sat af Lucky Luke, både Daltons og de mexicanske banditter bliver fanget.
Ratata møder en chihuahus og prøver at øve sig på et trick med en sukkerknald. Da det endelig lykkes, er det lidt synd at øveobjektet er en sten og ikke en sukkerknald.

Fuldstændig stilsikker og morsom tegneserie med små hip til koleriske mexicanske ambassadører og tilsvarende apatiske lokale lovhåndhævere. ( )
