The world A Thief Among the Trees is set in is a harsh, cruel place. To be fair, the entire [b:An Ember in the Ashes|27774758|An Ember in the Ashes (An Ember in the Ashes, #1)|Sabaa Tahir|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1519425615l/27774758._SY75_.jpg|39113604] series is more intense than I expected it to be, but this book is a particularly good mix of a perilous situation and an emotional consequence.

The art is clear and well-drawn. The combination of the high-quality art and the easy-to-read text makes this easy to read in an afternoon. The only thing I found difficult about this book is how gritty it is. I guess I'm a bit of a sucker for happy endings, which this book kind of can't have being it is a prequel and a book by [a:Sabaa Tahir|7770873|Sabaa Tahir|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1390501945p2/7770873.jpg].
