I listened to an Audible Original audiobook narrated by Stephen Fry, and this book is as close as I could find.

It took me forever to finish this 62-hours recording of Sherlock Holmes. Mostly, that's because I'd listen to a few minutes in bed before going to sleep. It's a very good book for that – not interesting enough to keep me awake and wanting to listen to more, and with stories interchangeable enough so that if I missed a big of one, it didn't seem like much of a loss. Stephen Fry was a good narrator for the most part, but sometimes at the end of a story, his voice lowered so much I couldn't hear what he was saying – and sometimes that was the most important part. This Audible version had flaws, especially with The Sign of Four. What happened there?

I've read some Arthur Conan Doyle before and found it mildly entertaining, but this recording just proved to me that I'm not really a Sherlock Holmes fan. ( )

3.5 stars for the entire canon. When it is good, it is very, very good (The Hound of the Baskervilles), but when it is bad, it is awful (The Valley of Fear, His Last Bow).

This (ISBN 193893816X) is a beautifully illustrated edition, and I will come back to it often. It is also one of the few actual complete collections of all of the OG Holmes canon, so it is well worth the $2.99 price tag. Definitely recommend. (less) ( )

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Complete Sherlock Holmes contains all 56 short stories and 4 novels in the Sherlock Holmes canon, including A Study in Scarlet, “The Red-Headed League,” “The Adventure of the Silver Blaze,” “The Final Problem,” “The Adventure of the Six Napoleons,” The Sign of the Four, and The Hound of the Baskervilles, all published between 1887 and 1927. Alas, while the text is reproduced in clear type on gilt-edged pages, this edition does not include Sidney Edward Paget’s original illustrations that accompanied the stories in The Strand magazine. As a gift for fans or those looking to read the stories for the first time, this Barnes & Noble edition includes an introduction from Barbara and Christopher Roden, leather binding, gilt edging, and a ribbon bookmark. Perhaps a later edition will include Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s noncanonical works, like “The Field Bazaar” (1896), “The Story of the Lost Special” (1898), “The Story of the Man with the Watches” (1898), “How Watson Learned the Trick” (1924), or the play Doyle co-wrote with actor William Gillette, “Sherlock Holmes: A Drama in Four Acts” (1899). It’s a good start for collectors and looks lovely upon any bookshelf, with a cover that artistically evokes the stories and matches the aesthetic of the leather-bound book. ( )
