Jeep Wrangler YJ 1987-1995 Performance Modifications by Don Alexander and Quinn Thomas is another great Cartech book in the Performance How to Series. I love all the full color photos and step by step instructions. Everything from a simple lift kit to swapping out engines is covered. Definitely recommend for Jeep Wrangler enthusiasts. ( )

Jeep Wrangler YJ, 1987-1995: Advance Performance Modifications is a helpful guide for above years to modify your Jeep using aftermarket parts. The quality of the chapters are not at quite a level as other SA Performance guides I have read. It does not seem to go as in depth as others. Overall, though, it is useful if you need to perform modifications. ( )

Thanks to CarTech, S.A., Thomas & Quinn for the opportunity to review a great book. It takes a lot of guts to put out a book in 2020 on a Jeep that hasn't been in production for ~25 years. And in thinking over the typical "Jeep mod" advice nowadays the model seems to be: ask random question on Facebook group (lacking a lot of details) and get back 20 random answers (also lacking a lot of details). This book really fills in the gap. For a YJ owner I would buy this book because sooner or later you're going to refer to it even if you have no upgrades planned. The book is broken out into logical sections based on the various systems of the vehicle. And most of the sections start with a high level overview of the purpose of the vehicle system, and what the main concerns are. (That is often applicable to any Jeep or 4x4. In fact I would recommend this YJ book as useful background information for the owner of ANY Jeep, if they don't have access to one for their JK or JL or whatever. It's still good background information.) After the high level overview they'll talk about what the problems are with stock YJ design (rust, common points of failure, areas that are often upgraded, etc.) and then they'll show you the specific ways upgrades can be accomplished. When there are multiple upgrades available they often show you pictures side by side of differing options, so you can visualize what something might look like. And to bring it all together the book is sort of woven in a narrative where they start with a beater YJ and by the end of the book they've fully upgraded every bit of it and turned the wreck into a great off-road machine. The value of close-ups in part replacement processes, diagrams, quality color photography, and lists of part resources can't be overstated. I have to give congratulations to CarTech and the authors because there may not be a huge audience seeking YJ books, but for that audience (and for other Jeep owners who may happen to come across a copy), they've provided an exceptional body of work. 5* essential own for a YJ owner. May even be one to ride along with the owner's manual. ( )
