Loading... Powwow Dayby Traci Sorell
![]() No current Talk conversations about this book. ![]() This book would be good for students who are in upper elementary school because of the content and higher level of language used. It is about a Native American little girl who is getting ready for "Powwow Day" which is a tradition in her culture. She feels like an outsider in her community because she is sick and not able to participate in this tradition, until she is pulled in. This would be good in a classroom because it shows students about different cultures and traditions, and also allows students to feel connected to a character if they feel like an outsider somewhere. This book would be a great read aloud for primary aged students. This book is about a young girl named River who is unable to dance on Powwow Day because she is ill. Throughout the book, on Powwow Day, everyone is dancing around River and dances to heal those that need healing, including River. At the end of the book, River feels the drumbeats beat through her, and she realizes that she will heal and be able to dance at the next Powwow Day. I would use this book in my classroom as a way to bring awareness to the different cultures and customs of indigenous peoples. This book provides appropriate representation for indigenous peoples and their various customs and rituals, while also telling a story of hope for a young girl who is sick and needs healing. This book would be good for primary and lower intermediate students. It could be used to start a conversation about Native culture, but also a good book for representation and could be used for a lesson about sickness. This book is about River who is a little girl that is getting better and wants to dance at the Powwow, but she doesn't feel strong enough. Others dance for her health and that's the push she needs to decide to dance at the next Powwow. no reviews | add a review

Because she has been very ill and weak, River cannot join in the dancing at this year's tribal powwow, she can only watch from the sidelines as her sisters and cousins dance the celebration--but as the drum beats she finds the faith to believe that she will recover and dance again.
