"June Branch visits her boyfriend, Liam, on Brody Island for a relaxing last weekend of summer. After an escaped group of criminals breaks into the house that June and Liam are watching, Liam is taken by them. June grabs a strange Viking axe and flees from the intruders. When one of the attackers finds her, she swings the axe and takes off his head, which rolls away and begins to babble in terror. For June to uncover the truth, she'll need to hear the facts straight from the mouths of her attackers, with...or without their bodies attached."--… (more)

Read this in monthly format and couldn't wait for each installment. Creative and fun twist on the vigilante/victim story line. June is badass. ( )

Spooky season continues with BASKETFUL OF HEADS by @joe_hill & @leomacs from @dccomics & Hill House Comics. Another, great story from Hill with his usual weird sense of humor: June Branch is visiting her boyfriend Liam on the small Maine island where he’s working for the summer when she gets entangled in a messy showdown between the local police force and some escaped convicts from a prison Stephen King fans will recognize. To protect herself and save Liam, June grabs the first weapon she can, a magical axe that severs heads, but keeps them talking. How many heads will it take for June to piece together the puzzle? A basketful should do. It’s goofy and bloody and exactly what I’ve come to expect from Joe Hill. I’m looking forward to the upcoming follow up series, REFRIGERATOR FULL OF HEADS. ( )

“You’re trying to get in my head.”
“Says the woman who took off mine.”

That'd be June Branch, wielder of the axe and carrier of the basket. The basket containing the heads that the axe removed from their bodies. And yet, the heads continue to talk! Creepy, eh?

This volume began with lots of “Jaws” references - maybe too many? Which worried me because I had previously read the author's graphic novel "Punge" which was an cover version of the movie "The Thing", but not nearly as good. Thankfully, once this book shed it's "Jaws" covers, it turned out to be a good read! Bloody good! They even gave a shout out to Hill's dad with the Shawshank Prison bus and inmates! And the story ends well, with a few twists that play out pretty nicely! As the back cover promised, "Heads will roll...". Indeed, they did!
