Probably one of the most honest and human books I've ever read. A simple but powerful masterpiece. ( )

at first i thought the angry homophobia was a setup for change and acceptance, but it was apparently sincere. so, aside from that and the sexism, it was a thoughtful and interesting read. (the era, 60's, puts it in some context, but I don't think makes it excusable.) its the (fictional) diary of a middle aged uruguayan office worker in the last year before retirement. heavy on introspection with decent writing. The description of this book as the diary of a company accountant really doesn't do it justice. It is a year in the life of widower Martin Santome and charts the events of his affair with a woman who is the same age as his daughter. Martin's philosophical musings paint a wonderful picture of a man who occupies the middle ground in almost everything - class, rationality, emotions, interests -but with a small but persistent streak of subversion. As well as the love story we get an absorbing sideways view of 1950s life in Montivideo. It won't give you an adrenalin rush, but it is an absorbing and ultimately delightful read.25 July 2017. ( )
