I read this while I was at a rehab facility following knee surgery, a couple of months ago. I wasn't able to write a review at the time, and I have forgotten most of it, but I did enjoy it. It concerned family relationships, marriage, lifelong friendship, and also the theft of art by the Nazis during World War II.

Given to a new friend when we met for coffee. ( )

I found it strange that this supposed to be Close" friendship carried with it a whole other life in Claire and Laura Valiant never got emotionally close enough to Claire to share. The grandmother seemed to have a better sence of things than Laura. After Claire died, the simple fact that Laura was unable to come right out and admit her feelings for Doug is a perfect example of her inability to be a really good friend to anyone. ( )
