Seattle PD's Tracy Crosswhite returns to work, only to find that all of the detective spots are filled and her adversarial boss, Captain Nolasco, assigns her to cold cases. As she is considering quitting, the retiring cold case detective says something that resonates with Tracy: that she will be a good successor because she cares so she digs in on a missing child case, a police officer's daughter, who goes missing during an ugly divorce case. Meanwhile, she gets to work on a current missing persons case with her former partner, Kinsington Rowe, because his partner is tied up in court. A woman never returns from a run, and the two start an intensive search, focused on residents in a neighborhood near a wooded park. There are two cold cases for missing prostitutes which Tracy begins to think may be tied together. Satisfying endings to both cases. ( )

In Her Tracks by Robert Dugoni is the eighth instalment in the Tracy Crosswhite series. However, it reads well as a standalone, filling the reader in on her past as the story develops. Tracy is a detective with the Seattle police department and has been put in charge of cold cases, an assignment she does not welcome gladly. When asked by her former partner to help with the disappearance of a young female jogger, she takes on that job as well. The woman was last seen on a forest trail. Tracy is also investigating the disappearance of a child who has not been seen for five years. Her parents were involved in a messy divorce and both are considered suspects. This police procedural deals with two completely different cases, which makes In Her Tracks a challenging and suspenseful read. The series portrays the ups and downs of police work, highlighting the dedication of detectives working difficult cases while trying to maintain a private life. Hopefully there will be more instalments by Robert Dugoni. Highly recommended. Thank you to Thomas & Mercer, NetGalley and the author for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. ( )

As with all of Dugoni’s crime stories there is action, intertwined plots and narratives. Seattle police detective Trace Crosswhite is finally returning to work and is twisted into the cold case office by a twisted boss. Great stories and characters you'll love to hate. I liked the book. ( )

What do you do when you return to a job you love to find out you no longer have that job? In the latest installment Tracy Crosswhite is caught in the middle of that familiar quandary - you know the one about the scorpion and the frog and the river that needs to be crossed. The moral of that story is the creature who needs to hurt even when it is to their detriment. Her superior dislikes her that much that he will sacrifice one of his best detectives to a job hoping she will fail or at the very least quit and walk away. Not a chance. As she finds herself in what might appear to be a dead end job she also catches a case in real time with her former partner.

As with all of Dugoni’s crime stories there is action, intertwined plots and narratives, and a million clues and players to be checked out. With each of the books in the Tracy Crosswhite series Dugoni develops the plot intricacies to fit the maturation of the character. She is evaluating the situations more clearly, better assessing her reactions, losing some of the brashness but none of her determination to solve and close out the crime. Another great book in the series.

Thank you NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for a copy. ( )

Here’s police procedural to love if you are from Seattle. Seattle Detective Tracy Crosswhite returns to active duty after maternity leave. Instead of her old position being given back to her she’s stuck as the cold case officer. She’s looking at the cases of two missing prostitutes and that of a missing 5-year old child. Her old partner asks for her help in solving the current case of a missing jogger. While the solution to one of the cases is totally satisfying, the other is filled with unspeakable horror. You need not be familiar with former Crosswhite mysteries to enjoy this one. ( )
