"Three thousand years ago, humans were hunted by powerful races with wild magic until the treaty was formed. Now, for centuries, the elves have taken young women from Luella's village to be their Human Queen. To be chosen is seen as a mark of death by the townsfolk. A mark nineteen-year-old Luella is grateful to have escaped as a girl. Instead, she's dedicated her life to studying herbology and becoming the town's only healer. That is, until the Elf King unexpectedly arrives... for her. Everything Luella had thought she'd known about her life, and herself, was a lie. Taken to a land filled with magic, Luella is forced to be the new queen to a cold yet blisteringly handsome Elf King. Once there, she learns about a dying world that only she can save. The magical land of Midscape pulls on one corner of her heart, her home and people tug on another... but what will truly break her is a passion she never wanted."--page two of cover.… (more)

I really enjoyed this book. It was light, quick and kept me listening. ( )

Skipped a chapter, but overall, not bad. I’ll be reading more of Kova’s books. ( )

A surprising new favorite.

I have had this in my library for months, pushing it aside for other books before finally giving in. I’m SO glad I did. Reminiscent of ACOTAR, I found so much joy and action in this book and will definitely be recommending it to everyone I know. ( )

Blah

I put off reading this for months because it looked like it would be stupid. But then I saw other readers give it 5 stars and decided to give it a try. It wasn't interesting or very original. I probably wouldn't have finished it if I wasn't on vacation. ( )

I enjoyed this but something just didn't hit right. I found the longer I read the vague feelings of discontent settled in. I enjoyed the world building although the reveal about the Elf King siring pure elf children from his elf mistress rather than the Queen should've been explained a lot sooner. It was driving me nuts the entire time trying to figure out Alice and Sevenna and their roles. The reasoning was okay I guess but it kinda kills the romance to hear all the Elf Kings have a relationship with someone else. . I would've liked to see more of the land and the people and Luella's powers. I liked Luella and Eldas for the most part. There was some wishywashy stuff towards the second half that felt forced. Luella started to drive me nuts with her ideas on duty and choice - was it really necessary to break his heart? Like I get where she was coming from but I also didn't like that she fight for him. Or something like that. I think that's where a lot of my dissatisfaction with this book comes from. I like the concept of choice but it also ruined the romance for me a bit. And I think I have very conflicting emotions about it. Rinni and Willow were great and I loved the friendship between them all - particularly Luella's relationship with Rinni. Hook was cool. Harlow was amusing - total jerk - but amusing nonetheless. The plot progressed fairly quickly, although there were some pacing issues - the first part was solid, the second fell apart a bit.

An enjoyable fantasy read. 3.5 stars, rounded to 4. ( )
