Fantasy. Romance. Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ? A princess in exile, a shapeshifting dragon, six enchanted cranes, and an unspeakable curse... Drawing from fairy tales and East Asian folklore, this original fantasy from the author of Spin the Dawn is perfect for fans of Shadow and Bone.
"A dazzling fairytale full of breathtaking storytelling." ??Stephanie Garber, New York Times bestselling author of Caraval
Shiori'anma, the only princess of Kiata, has a secret. Forbidden magic runs through her veins. Normally she conceals it well, but on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, Shiori loses control. At first, her mistake seems like a stroke of luck, forestalling the wedding she never wanted. But it also catches the attention of Raikama, her stepmother.
A sorceress in her own right, Raikama banishes the young princess, turning her brothers into cranes. She warns Shiori that she must speak of it to no one: for with every word that escapes her lips, one of her brothers will die.
Penniless, voiceless, and alone, Shiori searches for her brothers, and uncovers a dark conspiracy to seize the throne. Only Shiori can set the kingdom to rights, but to do so she must place her trust in a paper bird, a mercurial dragon, and the very boy she fought so hard not to marry. And she must embrace the magic she's been taught all her life to forswear??no matter what the cost.

Weaving together elements of The Wild Swans, Cinderella, the legend of Chang E, and the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, Elizabeth Lim has crafted a fantasy like no other, and one that will stay with readers long after they've turned the last page.

"A stunning remake of a fairytale. Six Crimson Cranes is the perfect blend of whimsy and ferociousness, with twists and turns that will tug at your heartstrings." ??Chloe Gong, New York Times bestselling author of These Violent Delights

"Fast-paced excitement is balanced with a satisfyingly intricate plot that weaves in elements from Western fairy tales and East Asian folklore." ??SLJ, starred review

I loved this book, it was definitely not what I expected but so happy for it. At first I was getting that Maleficent/evil stepmother type vibe but nope this is a completely whole another vibe. Shiori goes through this journey of trying to save her brother's, her kingdom and herself but along the way she learns more about herself than she could've ever imagined. Elizabeth Lim did such an amazing job with this book and unraveling the story I didn't even want it to end. The characters were all well written and the world building was perfect. To be honest I imagined this as an Anime because it reminded me of one but a real awesome one.
This is definitely not your typical damsel in distress story and I loved it all the more for it.
Highly recommend if you love folklore, magic, and the unexpected. ( )

Shiori is a princess with six brothers. She has made friends with a dragon and has some magic which is illegal where she lives. Her stepmother seems to have magic too and disguised Shiori and turns the brothers into cranes.
As she tries to survive away from home, she tries to figure out what is happening, who to trust, and how to undo the curse that is harming her family. She needs to speak her stepmother's true name. However, if she talks at all a brother or hers will die with any words. Epic story with several parts as each challenge is faced and overcome. ( )

Even knowing it's a fairy tale, I found the situations and events to be too unbelievable, and I didn't find the main character to be very sympathetic. ( )

* I got this book for review from the publisher for my honest thoughts*
I really loved this read. I thought it was super unique read. The structure reminded me so much of the structure of spin the dawn. I was a tad more invested in these characters and really loved how the fairytale elements was mixed with fantsay elements. This book also had some really fun and unexpected twists and turns. I also really loved the main character of this read and the focus on siblings realtionships. I also really loved the political alliance (marrige that was featured) def excited for the sequel! ( )

Dedication
To Charlotte and Olivia, for being my greatest adventure. You are my joys, my wonders, and my loves.
First words
The bottom of the lake tasted like mud, salt, and regret. The water was so thick it was agony keeping my eyes open, but thank the great gods I did. Otherwise, I would have missed the dragon.
