In The De-Coding of Jo, Jo has recently experienced terrible trauma after the abduction and torture of her mother. She’s now dealing with nightmares and sometimes turning to other substances to help cope. One thing I really loved about this book was how this fantasy ensemble cast was dealing with current day issues many teens face. Issues of sexuality, identity and acceptance. Anxiety and mental health. With each new character that was introduced (Jo, Nisha, Zaxen, Reyes, Daphne, Flynn) I found myself falling in love with the story a little more. Jo and her friends accidentally unleash a demonic evil that has been contained beneath their school—and one by one, her classmates are possessed. I particularly loved the strong role music played in this novel, both classical and modern, and what a positive and affirming book this would be for readers of all ages.
