Fanatics are an evil breed sums all of us up ... at some time or some place in our lives or some feeling that's past through our minds ..and that hint of sarcasm that mingles with inner truths makes for amusement for those who can face it .

How can you resist a book that includes, alongside Auden (from whom the title comes), Pound, Yeats, and the like, Monty Python ("All things dull and ugly,/ All creatures short and squat,/ All things rude and nasty/ The Lord God made the lot")?

Epigraph
Some thirty inches from my nose /
The frontier of my Person goes, /
And all the untilled air between /
Is private pagus or demesne. /
Stranger, unless with bedroom eyes /
I beckon you to fraternize, /
Beware of rudely crossing it: /
I have no gun, but I can spit. /

W.H. Auden
