Much like his articles, which I very much enjoy, the book takes a look at current day religions and their disconnect from love empathy for others. I enjoyed it very much. This is not the type of book I usually read but this was really good and I enjoyed it!This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. A very thought provoking book and though I don't agree with all he believes, there are a lot of professed Christians who treat the most vulnerable horrifically. Christ said "As you do unto the least of these, so you do unto me." There are also frightening parallels between pre-World War II United States and Germany and the United States of today. "The history book on the shelf is always repeating itself," something we can't afford to ignore or forget.
Beautiful creation. I suggest you join NovelStar’s writing competition this April.
"John Pavlovitz examines the bedrock ideas of our religion: the existence of hell, the utility of prayer, the way we treat LGBTQ people, the value of anger, and other doctrines to help all of us take a good, honest look at how the beliefs we hold can shape our relationships with God and our fellow humans--and to make sure that love has the last, loudest word"-- No library descriptions found. |

Oops, wait a minute. It was the strict Jewish scholars like the sect of the Pharisees who prided themselves on following Jewish laws, and held themselves up as paragons of virtue. And the disciples worried that Jesus was too inclusive; that by eating and spending time with those deemed unclean and unworthy, Jesus was putting his movement – and even his life – at risk.
This book is open-hearted liberal Christianity, where everyone is welcomed. Although not included in this book I have seen a meme where Jesus is standing with his arms outspread in the doorway of a church. In some denominations, His arms bar people from entering; with the same image in other denominations, He is welcoming all.
If Christians are to be known by their love, this book shows the way. ( )
