Quite a well worked mix of police procedural and urban fantasy in small town USA. Fortunetly not quite para-normal romance although there's plenty of divorced singletons making eyes at each other. The basic premise isn't ever quite explained but seems to be that sometime in the distant past an ancestor made a bargain with elves/spirits of the land for protection (and wishes) and in return promised them a controlled enclave of humanity. That bargain has followed down the diluted human generations with only a few people still able to experience something they don't quite understand. Last generation (eg the characters' parents) the strongest Lady of Blood decided that these spirits were devils and being a god-fearing christian woman was scared for the state of her soul, and hence didn't inform her daughter of any of this.

In the now a few bodies are turning up intermittently, dying of no obvious cause. The small town police force haven't had any leads at all, but at last the old chief has retired and his new younger deputy has taken over. Coincidentally he has a little of the Blood, and a few relationships with those with a bit more. Between them they start to piece things together, but also experience a lot more than they expected.

The small town USA setting is fairly generic, but the characters stand out well enough. I didn't particularly connect to any of them, and we jump about a bit between the policeman and a couple of the Blooded, but ti's all well signaled. The pacing works very well, from discovery of a body to the possible links to something unusual. A rare beast being a fantasy Duology the ending of this one is clear enough, but the full resolution is obviously to come in the sequel which I might look up as it's an interesting set-up. ( )
