These ones are a little on the hard side for very beginning readers, but they are amazingly entertaining for everyone in the family -- as a read-aloud, as an adult, they are just so silly, thoughtful, and full of kindness. ( )

This early reader book would be good for primary readers. It is about a pig who decides that she wants to fly and accomplishes it with the help of her friends. This book would be good for a child who is beginning to learn how to read because the pictures portray the story pretty well but it may be problematic for use in a classroom because it is fairly long for an early reader. Super cute and funny, the facial expressions are adorable. Just enough for both of my young nephews to read it themselves. ( )

Piggie is determined to fly; Gerald is pessimistic. But when Piggie pulls it off, Gerald decides that tomorrow, HE will fly - and now Piggie is the doubtful one. ( )

Book description
In this book Piggie - who is a pig - is bound and determined to fly, though Gerald, Piggie's best friend - the elephant - is convinced that it will not be possible for Piggie to fly. Throughout the story Piggie continues her effort and tries many ways to fly, all the while Gerald is skeptical until a change of heart and a twist at the end has Gerald shifting confidence and faith in his friend. What's great about this book, and Willems in general are the little, understated life lessons hidden in the humor in all of his books for children. These are hugely popular with children for both their humor, simplicity, easy reading and illustrations, yet all have some small life lesson that can translate immediatley into a child's life.
