This French translation in rhymed verse of Lermontov’s famous poem reads well; François Coppée calls the translation ‘lyrique’.
Gorki narrates in his autobiography that he read this poem as a 15-year-old to his fellow workers who were entranced by it. I wonder whether today any 15-year-old would want to be reading it? and uneducated workers would want to have it read to them? 150 years ago, in deepest Russia, the people thirsted for stories of strange lands and strange events, today we suffer from an overload of narratives and images.
