The backstory was lacking, leaving much to be desired. However, the conclusion gave me the feels. Initially thought to rate 2.5, however the ending ultimately tipped the scale to a 3. (I liked it. Didnt hate it, didn't love it.. just liked it) I saw this book plastered EVERYWHERE on #booktok and eventually saw it in my local bookstore. Decided to grab it and to be honest, I glad I did. The female main character Ava, was a bit much for me at the start. She was so sunshine and rainbows but as I got to know her, I started to admire and respect her and the things she had been through. She turns out to be pretty awesome, to be honest. The male main character was just "okay" in my book. He sounded fine as heck, but with a lot of mental screws loose. I didn't really like him personally, but I like how he changed through the book. He really grows with Ava and it's nice to see. It feels like a darkness vs the light through the entire book and it isn't unpleasent. I really love this authors writing, while the a character or two might not of been my favorite, they can write a spice AND a plot that's decent. I have already ordered the others in the series, I'm excited. I still give this book 5 stars because I believe it is a new favorite in this genre for me! Eh. The spice was good and that's about it. The plot was NOT believable and the characters even less so. I mean this guy acts like she's in the mafia with SEAL level training when he's just …. A 27 year old? With unreasonable amounts of money thanks to a unreasonably high IQ? And despite a "modest" background Ava is friends with a literal princess? The first few chapters just felt cringey with the character descriptions and cliches. Don't get me wrong - I still read the thing in two days. But it's good for the romance/spice and not much more. Unsure if I'll continue with the series … no reviews | add a review

I loved this book and looking forward to reading the rest of this series. The spice was spot on and the characters were great. I enjoyed reading Ava and Alex coming together. There is definitely something to be said for the morally grey men and Ana Huang wrote a terrific one in Alex Volkov! ( )
