Book description
Venetian drawings of the 17th-18th centuries, from the collection of books and artwork of Joseph Smith c1675 or 1682-1770, cf. De Ricci, pp.54-55 , acquired by George III in 1762. The catalogue of 425 drawings--studies, variants and finished works--is arranged by artist and accompanied by 44 text illustrations of drawings and a few of the paintings for which some of the drawings were studies. A section of 83 plates of drawings follows. The majority of items are by Marco or Sebastiano Ricci. The following catalogue of 18th-century opera and other caricatures by Croft-Murray uses the same format, with 197 entries, 62 text illustrations, and 23 plates.
