A history of the illustrious House of Cavendish, which produced the famous Dukes of Devonshire. The book begins with the founder of the house of Cavendish, Sir William, and his marriage to Bess of Hardwick. It ends with the story of the 11th Duke of Devonshire and his Duchess, Deborah Mitford, and their struggle to turn Chatsworth into the salvation of the family.

It's all here, from humble beginnings to loftiest heights. The book tells of the creation of splendid Chatsworth and it's equally important cousin Hardwick Hall. The book ends with the 11th Duke, because that's who held the office at the time of publication. I wish the book was updated to include the story of the 12th Duke, Stoker, and his wife, Amanda, who both work tirelessly to ensure that Chatsworth continues on.

Very good reading! ( )
